A Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is the version of a product or service that allows you to learn the most with the least effort.
For example, Amazon’s website started out as a small selection of books. If a customer ordered one, Amazon bought it from a distributor and shipped it. This allowed the company to test out the potential of the online market without investing a lot of money.
Business expert Eric Ries developed the MVP approach to minimise the amount of time and money required to get feedback. You build an MVP, find out what customers think of it, improve the solution and start the cycle again. Once Amazon had tested out their MVP with books, they started to slowly expand and test out customer appetite for other products.
This is useful for the Lean Canvas because it highlights the importance of learning from your customers. Think about the MVP approach as you’re filling in the Solution box. What solutions do you offer that can help you find out more about your customers’ problems? Solutions that are too complicated or expensive will restrict what you're doing.
